Hans Hofmann: The Nature of Abstraction

There may be nothing more enjoyable than a knowledgeable lecture on a painter's history and evolution. The creative process brought into a biographical story. Today Lydia Gordon, Associate Curator of Exhibitions and Research at PEM, gave a wonderful lecture at the Cape Ann Museum on the current PEM exhibition, Hans Hofmann: The Nature of Abstraction, running through Jan. 5, 2020.

Hofmann was renowned as a painter, and as a teacher of painters. Frankenthaler, Eames, Krasner, Nevelson … all regarded him as a mentor. He broke ground in Abstract Expressionism. His paintings are derived from nature, which he deconstructs into an essence of forms, planes, colors. This is a PEM exhibition not to miss.
