Cape Ann School of Painting

Two local artists, T. M. Nicholas and Stapleton Kearns, gave a fascinating lecture on the Cape Ann School of Painting, with insights that only other painters could provide. Their lecture focused on 9 artists, distinct in styles and technique, who were united by the Cape Ann region where they all lived and painted for at least a significant part of their lives. In capturing landscapes on Cape Ann they became masters of light, water, buoyancy, reflections, and all of the atmospheric nuances that characterize a Cape Ann fog or calmness or morning mist or afternoon snow—or imminent seasonal change. We have posted paintings for each of the featured painters: Frederick John Mulhaupt, Harry Aiken Vincent, Anthony Thieme Jane Peterson, Lester Stevens, Aldro Hibbard, Antonio Cirino, Carl Williams Peters, Emile Gruppe. But they were also avid travelers, thus, the first painting is a Venetian harbor scene by Jane Peterson.
