COSMOS subscribers seen in Sardinia, Italy …

An Artistic Trek to the Isle of Sardinia
Many of our regional artists will travel beyond Cape Ann, to add additional extraordinary vistas to their portfolios. Lynn Maguire, a well-known member of the local cultural scene, along with 14 other artistic travelers and Rockport artist Caleb Stone as guide, recently enjoyed a 10-day sojourn on the Isle of Sardinia. The trip was booked through Tuscany in the Frame, a travel agency owned by Rafaelle Nobile, offering fully orchestrated trips for artists in search of scenic destinations.

Gordon Massman Open Studio Extravaganza

A convivial group relaxes in the studio, with Saturn's Sunset in the background. The Gordon Massman Open Studio attracted a crowd of nearly 120 art enthusiasts, who became the first to see Gordon's magnificent, vibrant canvases, all produced in his Rockport studio warehouse next to the train tracks. The event was an elixir of energizing art, enthusiastic guests, exquisite catering, deep and new friendships, and perfect weather. The Cosmos was Blessed!

COSMOS Tours Don Gorvett Studio & Gallery

COSMOS toured the Don Gorvett Studio and Gallery and can now report firsthand that this is a destination providing immersion into both the artistry and technology behind the Gorvett woodcuts. Don is shown with one of his summer interns Halley Wilson-Thayer, a student in the fine arts program at Tufts University. They are standing in front of a mural that Don made when a high school senior, and which was miraculously retrieved from the school's storage, with minimal damage. June 25 Reception cancelled due to fire at Beacon Marine Basin.

New Leadership at RAA&M

Karen Koretsky (upper left) has officially assumed leadership at Rockport Art Association & Museum, a position that will include host duties at their legendary receptions. Not a hardship. This event honored the opening of the second summer show, The Sanctuary of Nature. T.M. Nicholas is shown, lower left, digging into his gift box of adult goodies. Jan Charles is shown with clip board and a painting which sold that night, to Jan's delight as she was on transaction duty. Click image to enlarge.

Restless Observer, Robert James Anderson Paintings & Sculpture

The opening reception for the new exhibition at the Cultural Center of Rocky Neck brought out a crowd of people, including the artist’s family and friends, with their wonderful memories of Bob, an artistic legend in the region for more than 40 years. Seen in the photo (left) is his wife, Peg Anderson, having a mirthful moment with her sister-in-law and three friends.

More photos from the Robert Anderson exhibition reception, starting lower left, counterclockwise: Meredith Anderson, the artist’s daughter, chats with David Archibald, potter of Plum Cove Pottery and the artist’s brother-in-law. New friends Pia Juhl Nadel and Lauren McKenney. Lauren McKenny, now of Marblehead, recounted her youthful memories in Rocky Neck, including her first drink, a strawberry daiquiri.

Gloucester Stage Company has returned to their indoor theater for the 2022 season

Opening set of Gloria, now playing through June 26. The narrative, staged in the office of a publishing company, moves through layers of disillusionment, as the characters experience tragedy, followed by the passage from grief to greed.

On May 26, local author William Cross presented an engaging lecture at the Sawyer Free Library, Gloucester, drawn from his recently published book Winslow Homer: American Passage. Copies were available for purchase, from The Book Store, Gloucester. Upper left photo, Rebecca Reynolds, Director of Manship Artists Residency, procures the inscription for her book. COSMOS learned that Winslow Homer once resided in the Blackburn Building, 2 Main Street, the same building as COSMOS new headquarters. Kismet.

North Shore Arts Association of Gloucester, May 22 reception for Exhibition Two. Attendees pause to watch announcements of awards and a poignant tribute to the late David Curtis, artist and revered teacher.

More action from the May 22 NSAA reception: Ted Charles looking cool on the deck of NSAA Gallery, perhaps the regional art institution with the best view—the Gloucester Harbor.

Artist Gordon Massman and his wife Judith Fabian, enjoying a work by Dale Sherman Blodget.

Lynn Maguire, enjoying and serving the libations. Lynn will soon embark on ten days of painting on the Island of Sardinia and has promised COSMOS photos for our June 25 issue.

Many flocked into Cape Ann Museum during the weekend of May 13 - May 15 to experience Cape Ann Blossoms, A Celebration of Spring. Throughout the museum were positioned 18 pairings of the most wondrous floral arrangements inspired by a piece of art in the museum's collection. COSMOS learned that the pairings were a blind draw, not selected by the florists. It appears that all were delightfully inspired. As a bonus, this was also a highly aromatic exhibition as well. The docents were also distributed throughout. Ann Pulver (insert) provided a wealth of background information on painting shown, Three Dancing Girls, Charles Hopkinson (1869-1962), artist and father of the three girls dancing.

A festooned Cape Ann Sea Serpent, who daily greets guests at the entrance to Cape Ann Museum, received the COSMOS Blue Ribbon for most entertaining "arrangement" in the recent Cape Ann Blossoms event. Reminding us that indeed, flowers can be worn as well as arranged. And Cassie shows us how to do it—with style and attitude! Arrangement by Elin Af Klinteberg and Greta Bragshaw

Marblehead Arts Association (MAA) invited COSMOS for a visit and tour of current exhibition Variations 2022 (through June 19), with works selected from a national roster of submissions. MAA operates out of the King Hooper Mansion, a magnificent historic building housing galleries on several floors and a lower level social room with the original cooking fireplace, for events. This year MAA celebrates their Centennial. COSMOS' two expert and gracious exhibition guides are shown in photo, Missy Fisher, Artist Member and Past President, and Jim Murphy, Artist Member. Image on right: Photograph by Larry Dunn. Piano: the oldest in Marblehead and functions with 86 keys, short two. Additional members of the MAA board and Executive Director Catherine Amidon joined in a round table discussion, covering cultural trends and plans for the organization.
